Breaking Modelling Barriers

Would you want to break barriers and become an advocate for positive change? The modelling industry is commonly known to be rigid for newcomers to break into, so this is an interesting topic. Holding traditional standards to account and questioning why there are limitations is a massive step to achieving a collapse in the barriers surrounding this industry.

From the times of supermodel icons such as Cindy Crawford and Kate Moss, we’re now in a position where models like Winnie Harlow and Lyn Slater are making waves. The tide is certainly changing and Models Direct is proud to be part of the movement where diversity and inclusivity are an exclusive part of this.

So, how has our modelling agency contributed towards this industry becoming more encompassing of everyday people? Let’s take a look here.

Embracing all shapes and sizes

There are millions of people in this world, and each person is unique in their own way. This is the same for their physical appearance such as their body shape and size. We’re now seeing more and more models head towards this industry and get represented by us because we celebrate all body types. We ask for potential models to apply regardless of their size.

This is why our plus-size and petite divisions are so popular and in demand by our clients. They request all body types and our agency can put forward models that match their requirements. Check out our blog on body positivity.

Embracing all races and ethnicities

An appreciation and respect for all races and ethnicities has been injected across many industries including the modelling platform. So long stereotypical representations as the industry is welcoming all skin tones to elevate a true reflection of the population and our MD team is on board helping this happen. We’ve been doing this since our inception as a leading UK modelling agency, and we’re not stopping even after three decades of dedication to our craft.

Embracing all genders

There’s a fresh openness to celebrating all gender types where models who identify themselves as non-binary or transgender are also being represented in modelling.

Leading stars such as Andreja Pejic and Hunter Schafer are in the spotlight and making incredible waves whilst bringing positive attention to this and redefining gender stereotypes.

Our agency welcomes models of all genders and we’re proud that we provide this opportunity for our models to explore.

Other areas where we’ve broken down modelling barriers are age and disability. Our vision has been to promote a wider and more enriching range of people who are confident in themselves and their abilities.

It’s wonderful to see how the modelling landscape is transforming from a once narrow and strict perspective to one that is more relatable and reflective to the general population.
