Do I need professional photos?

The answer is “no”.

It’s one of the many plus points about becoming a Models Direct model. We’ve never requested that new models registering with us pay for professional photos. We know that there are many reputable photographers out there; we just don’t need professional photos of new models to start the booking process.

But we do need clear photos that accurately depict a model. Two initial photos are all we ask so we can judge your natural looks. We ask for just photos because we want to make the registration process as easy as possible for everyone interested in becoming a new model with Models Direct.

The criteria we ask for in the two photos is straightforward, but it must be adhered to.

When applying with us, please remember the following:

  • We ask for at least one headshot.
  • Keep the centre of the camera at eye level.
  • Use Smartphones to capture your headshots. You don’t need fancy digital cameras; as long as the headshots remain clear then the photos will be suitable.
  • Avoid unwanted shadows.
  • Take the photos against a neutral-coloured background in a well-lit room. However, avoid excessive light as it will reduce the impact of your all-important face shots.
  • Don’t be tempted to take selfies. Ask a friend to take charge of your Smartphone.
  • Be natural. Smile, but don’t force a happy expression.
  • Remove excessive jewellery and make-up. Though you may be asked to wear accessories on set, we need a clear representation of all models at the beginning.
  • No one else should be in the photo – including pets!
  • Don’t hide tattoos, but remember that natural features such as hair, cheek bones and full lips are far more important.
  • The general height-to-width ratio of the photos should be 5:4.

The best way to take the perfect photo is to snap away and delete certain images you know don’t meet the above requirements. Like all our processes, it’s straightforward and designed to make the application as accessible to any prospective model of all ages and technical ability.

It’s important for all models to understand that Models Direct is an employment agency regulated by the government. We are not a “showcase agency” who charges people for photos with little or no potential to find work. Indeed, these showcase agencies are not legally allowed to find work for their models. What people may receive is nothing at all, whilst their professional photos gather dust on desks or in fake portfolios.

All we charge is a small admin fee that covers the cost of giving our vetted clients access to all registered models. We remind everyone to be wary of any agency that states professional photos must be used for them to represent any model.

So, be reassured that we do not ask for professional photos for models to join us. They can use professional photos in their subsequent e-portfolios if they wish to do so but, again, this isn’t something we insist on.

A ring light might be a good investment for those who want to add wonderful photos to their Models Direct portfolio. Experiment with them, and impress us and our clients!
