Building Self-Confidence at Work

Are you feeling unconfident at work? Maybe overwhelmed? Perhaps uncomfortable? Is imposter syndrome kicking in? These feelings are not uncommon in the workplace. It happens, for various reasons, and can strike at any point.

One positive way to look at it is, you wouldn’t be in your position if the hiring team didn’t think you’d fit the job spec. Self-doubt does peep its head from time to time though, sometimes more than you’d like.

Models Direct are here to address how you can take some steps every day to help you get closer to boosting your confidence, self-esteem and ability to be your best self at work so that you can be productive and successful. Let’s take a look at these manageable bite-size changes which can have a positive impact on your outlook at work and stamp out your feelings of self-doubt.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions
One of the things we might shy away from is reaching out and asking questions. It could be fear of appearing incompetent or because we don’t want to trouble anyone. You aren’t expected to know absolutely everything about your job, it’s still a learning curve where new areas will arise, so don’t feel discouraged to ask. It takes courage to get out of your comfort zone, and asking questions is one way of clarifying things and putting your mind at ease.

Celebrate your personal successes
No matter how small, whether it was projecting your ideas in a group session or completing a task on time, celebrate your personal successes. If you don’t, you might not get the chance to reflect till much later (as time is whizzing past). Treat yourself by going out, having a pamper sesh, or buying your favourite drink! You deserve to give yourself a pat on the back.

Take on a confident persona
Sometimes stepping into confidence can be a way to become confident. The idea is if you act it, eventually, you’ll feel it. Confidence doesn’t come to all of us naturally as it’s a learnt skill which will take time to master. Taking on a confident attitude (even if you don’t feel it) could be an effective way of feeling the boost and starting your journey of inner positivity. Positive affirmations are also a brilliant way of unleashing this. It takes perseverance but repeating your favourite, most effective phrases to yourself over and over can help you to engrain the feeling that you can do the job and that you are the right person for the position.

Ask for feedback
It can be difficult to swallow a negative comment but learning and self-development can start from asking for feedback. Be prepared to perhaps hear things you might not want to but try and digest them positively so that you can move forward and make necessary improvements so you can be the best at the job at hand.

Embrace new opportunities
You might find that you back out of trying new opportunities because you don’t want to step outside of your comfort zone. Pretty understandable if you ask us. However, if a new opportunity arises, why not put yourself forward for it and see how it goes rather than shying away and helping those feelings of imposter syndrome manifest further? You never know, you might surprise yourself.

Do your research
Doing your background research is vital. Helping yourself to learn new skills, information, and methods can be a great way of instilling confidence in your knowledge. The more knowledge you have, the more at ease you’ll be knowing what’s what.
