What Do Clients Look for in a Model Portfolio?

07Our clients – the hundreds of vetted brands who approach us looking for the right models – are a solid bunch of professionals. They know what they need for their marketing campaigns, and they know that we can provide them with exactly what they’re looking for. That’s the main reason why so many clients have stayed with us throughout the years, and why new clients contact us every year.

We have a very good relationship with our clients. We understand their needs, and they trust us to supply them with the best commercial modelling talent.

If you’re a model reading this, you will want to know exactly what our clients look for when they scan a model’s portfolio after we’ve recommended the models to them. Remember – only registered models will be put forward whenever their look is called for, and only models put forward will have their portfolios looked at by our clients.

What catches a client’s eye? How can you give yourselves the best chance of being picked by a client?

First, all registered Models Direct models receive a link and log-in details to their own e-Portfolio. Treat it as it should be: a crucial part of being a model with us, and one that needs tweaking and updating regularly. Never leave your portfolio dormant for a few months. We’re not suggesting you must add new photos every week, but uploading clear, accurate photos and / or reels every four – six weeks is sensible. And don’t forget to do this! Your photos must reflect how you look now, not how you did a few months ago!

Second, clients look for clear photos with few distractions (e.g. irrelevant or complicated backgrounds). They want to see how you look, how old you are, where you live, and whether you’ve been dedicated and enthusiastic by adding new images every few weeks. It matters!

Third, they also want to see photos or evidence of any modelling work. Experience isn’t essential for commercial modelling, but treat your portfolio like a CV, and that means showing off your work, whether it be paid or volunteer work.

Models can’t expect to be offered work if they sit back and rest on their laurels. Put in a little work yourselves, and the chances of being offered work will increase significantly.
