A model’s welfare is paramount to us. A healthy model is a happy one, and therefore more effective once chosen by our clients. Regardless of what happens on set, every model should take some time to reflect on their mental and physical health. Often, a person’s physical wellbeing is governed by a solid mental attitude – and vice versa. Both are essential, although many people will probably agree that maintaining a healthy mind is more important.

Mental health plays a part in most parts of our lives. Anxieties and self-doubt can arise when you least expect them, playing tricks and causing unwanted feelings towards day-to-day life. We’re not machines, so we can’t function perfectly all the time. What we need to remember is that it’s natural for us to have blips along the way, and to learn from mistakes.
We hope all Models Direct models approach their work / applications with a sense of importance and fun. Modelling isn’t a “typical” job, but it often takes research, practice, patience and a little bit of luck to land the ideal role. Fortunately, we have the right clients that are constantly on the lookout for everyday models just like you.
Looking after your mental health and keeping physically heathy will undoubtedly increase your chances of securing modelling work with us. Though it’s always the client’s decision which model they pick, models will be happier in the long term by observing the following advice.

- Self-improvement. Strive to make weekly adjustments that can have benefits to your life. Make a schedule and stick to it. Examples include going to bed at regular times, reading more and “feeding your brain” by completing puzzles.
- Love yourself. Learn to be selfish in small amounts. Take time out to engage in activities that you enjoy. It’s easy to please others, but don’t fall into the trap of ignoring your own wishes.
- Engage with friends. Most of our models will have a large circle of friends, and that’s never a bad thing. Explore new experiences with them and confide with your most trusted companions.
- Use social media wisely. Different platforms have different benefits, but social media can also play a part in poor mental health. It’s great for advertising and local news, but it’s no match for real communication and socialising with trusted family and friends.
- Don’t dwell on the past. Concentrate on the present and future. We can’t alter what has gone on before, but we can focus on improving our futures.
- Unbottle your feelings. Stress can escalate simply by not seeking help or advice. Don’t keep feelings or fears bottle up. Yes, it really is good to talk.

Advice to remain physically healthy
Exercise more and eat better? This is a good start, but let’s explore four specific tips to achieve physical wellbeing.
- Try to get a near full vitamin range in your diet. Supplements can help if needed, although a full range of foods is better to achieve peak health. Try leafy green veg, all fruits and oily, high protein fish and low fatty meats like turkey and chicken.
- Reduce sitting / “screen time”. If you must work in front of a laptop, take regular breaks, stretch and consider using a screen reflector. Also, think about which times of day are your most productive.
- Do a “food swap”. We’re not advocating ditching all unhealthy foods. However, a few simple alternatives can work wonders. Instead of snacking on foods high in saturated fat like biscuits, chocolate and certain crisps, opt for nuts, raw vegetable or snacks lower in fat.
- Never forget the basics. Cut down on sugary drinks and alcohol, increase your water intake, and rest well.
Don’t wait until the first of the month to change your habits! There’s no reason why you shouldn’t start now; if the willpower is there, you can accomplish anything at any time.
