Set Ready: Essential Kit Every Commercial Model Should Have in Their Bag

If you’ve registered with us, it’s completely natural to feel a little spark of excitement as you look ahead to your first modelling job. Every model’s journey moves at its own pace, and while you might not be selected immediately, staying realistic and patient makes the experience far more enjoyable. Modelling is still a competitive world, but there’s plenty of space for new faces to shine.

But that doesn’t mean our models should be dispirited. Being both true to yourself and optimistic comes naturally to a lot of models, so there’s no reason to think ahead and imagine what your modelling assignments will bring.

Ahead of setting off to your modelling jobs, what items are classed as essential for most models to take to jobs? Are some items no model can do without?  Some items are a personal choice, but we’ve whittled the following list down to what we class as essential in a Models Direct model’s kit bag:

1. Hair products. These might depend on the forecasted weather (wind and rain can play havoc with your barnet) and they might be influenced by what type of assignment you’re taking part in. If the job is largely a speaking part, you may sacrifice some hair products for other items.

2. Small towel. Essential in case the weather turns, or if you have a sweaty (sorry, perspiring) face.

3. Travel-size makeup kit. Concealers, foundation, mascara, lipstick – all good for last minute touch-ups.

4. Comfortable, practical shoes. If you’ve done your research, you’ll know if you must walk to your job after driving or taking public transport, and you don’t want to develop aches or blisters before arriving.

5. Spare clothes. You don’t have to pack many, although spare underwear, one regular shirt and a pair of socks are always a good idea.

6. Refreshments. Take a full water bottle (avoid fizzy drinks) and some light, neutral snacks like fruit and energy bars.

7. Phone. Make sure it is fully charged and that you’ve saved all essential job details, e.g. postcode of job, contact name and phone number etc.

8. And finally…enthusiasm! Wow the photographers, filmmakers and other models with your zeal for life and dedication to follow instructions in a relaxed setting. Your enthusiasm will be obvious for everyone to see and will go a long way to securing more jobs in the future.
