Dealing with not being selected for a modelling job

Not being selected for anything you have really got your heart set on can be hard – and modelling is no exception.

But it is a fiercely competitive world out there and we have all had to deal with not being chosen at some time or other in our lives.

Those seeking new jobs can send out hundreds of applications before even getting an interview and any budding actor will tell you they have attended many, many auditions before finally being cast.

We know this won’t make you feel any better when you haven’t been picked for a modelling job but it is good to have an understanding that you are not the only one in that position.

In the world of modelling, as in many other industries, occupations and activities, if you really want to make it you have to do all you can to help yourself.

The system here at Models Direct is very simple to follow and we always ensure we explain it very clearly to new models.

We want people to join us with their eyes open and a full understanding of what to expect.

As an authentic, government-regulated employment agency we adhere to strict guidelines and operate within the law at all times.

We also do all we can to look after our models and clients and ensure the very best service for everyone.

All female and male models on our books have an online, e-portfolio and it is their responsibility to maintain and update this.

For child and baby models, we ask their parents to do the same.

This is vital as we cannot put any models forward for jobs where their photos are clearly out of date.

We have to know exactly what a model looks like at any given time – we cannot send adult models along to assignments if they have changed the colour or length of their hair.

And we can’t send four-year-old children if we can only see what they looked like when they were two!

Our clients come to us with very precise requirements for the models they need then we send them a suitable selection.

They then make the final choice as to who they would like to employ.

This is why we never, ever assure any of our models that they will be offered work.

So what should you do if you find you are not being selected for modelling work?

Firstly, check all the details on your e-portfolio are correct and that you have given us lots of information about yourself.

Of course, this should include any relevant experience, but in addition, please tell us about your skills, hobbies and interests as these may also make a difference when being put forward for assignments.

Then, make a note in your diary to update your photos every three or four months.

Take colourful, interesting and seasonal shots that reflect who you are – then upload them for us and our clients to see.

You could also consider putting together a showreel and making your own connections with local photographers or advertising agencies.

As your agent, we are always happy to step in and help you check out any potential work, negotiate fees and ensure you are paid promptly.

The most important thing to do after not being selected for a modelling job, however, is to avoid getting too disillusioned.

Read through our review and blog pages to see the wide array of models we have on our books and the incredible variety of assignments we send them off to.

Our clients require all sorts of different models at different times and there is no reason why one of them shouldn’t be you.

Some of our models are offered work within weeks while for others it can take much longer.

If you really want to give modelling a go, you need to make sure your e-portfolio really shines out.

And, when you aren’t selected, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and think about whether there is anything you can do to improve your chances next time.

Modelling is very competitive but there are lots of people out there who do succeed.

You only have to look at all the campaigns and advertising around you every day to see the many, many different models that our clients and others employ every day.
