How do I know if I’m suitable for modelling?

That’s a sincere and relevant question, which we’re sure some of you have asked yourselves.

If you have, it means you’ve considered modelling seriously, and not just ploughed ahead with applying to register with us without too much thought. We always encourage our models to spend time perusing our website, gaining as much information as possible about commercial modelling and how we work with our clients and models. So, well done on stopping to think about if you’re suitable for modelling.

The first nugget of knowledge newcomers must realise is that commercial modelling is very different from high-end fashion modelling often associated with catwalks and glitzy magazines. That’s not say that Models Direct models don’t experience the highs of being filmed or photographed by professionals for famous brands, because they often do. But commercial modelling is not the same as high-end modelling.

The main difference between the two is:

  • Commercial models are required by brands / companies to advertise / sell products, or to appear in campaigns to appeal to the public. They are often required to depict “real people”, and therefore they can be seen in online adverts, on websites and in catalogues. Additionally, they can appear on TV and in newspapers.
  • High-end fashion models are used in fashion shows, on catwalks and in glitzy editorials to promote more niche brands (usually luxury products and clothes).

High-end modelling often carries stricter requirements – e.g. models required to be a certain height. This means it’s harder to break into the cut-throat high-end fashion industry.

Commercial modelling is open for just about anyone with the desire to become one. The first step is to find a reputable modelling employment agency – and that’s where Models Direct can help. We’re Europe’s leading commercial modelling agency, with opportunities for everyone. One look at our available jobs will give potential models a flavour of opportunities and the types of companies we work with.

When you realise the main difference between a high-end fashion model and a commercial model, it should become clear that you have the suitable requirements to become a model yourself.

Why the lack of strict requirements? Good question. The best answer is that we have the clients who need models of all ages, sizes, backgrounds and skills to help them with their marketing campaigns. Variety is the key. We represent several types of models and we’ll recommend them to our clients if their looks are called for. Though the final decision is always the client’s, models must be seen by them to be considered in the first place. Therefore, we cater for anyone who wants to be a model.

Suitability to become a model begins with the understanding that you can be one – even without prior experience. The next step is having the confidence to know that anything is achievable, especially in the commercial modelling world where our clients are always looking for determined individuals with the desire to do well.

Modelling is open to anyone, and the first step is applying with us.
