Fashion is our perfect fix for letting our style and personality shine. Fashion models know this as they slay the runway with designer dreams and unique pieces which will land on high street store aisles as inexpensive alternatives. But it does come at a price. If you’re investing in fast fashion, it’s cheap, yes, and you do get to keep up with the ever-evolving trends so you’re the definition of a style icon. But, the down side is that it negatively impacts the environment and those who are involved in the industry.
Here are some fast fashion facts to give you more of an idea (and probably encourage you to think twice about indulging in it!)

Every 3 in 5 garments produced end up in a landfill. The industry contributes to 10% of the global annual carbon footprint. This is more than all international flights and maritime combined! Even though 46% of UK shoppers say they avoid fast fashion, more than half purchased at a fast fashion retailer in the past year.
So what’s the alternative?
This is the opposite of fast fashion where being more kinder to the planet and people who are a part of generating the fashion process are at the heart of the movement. It focuses on using eco-friendly resources, such as using natural, longer-lasting fabrics and better wages and working conditions for those in the industry.
The goal is to produce fashion through innovative methods such as recycling, reusing and upcycling old clothes into something new and usable. Sounds like a dream? Nope! It’s certainly a reality for those who are trying to make a positive attempt to reduce our carbon footprint.

What does sustainable fashion mean for models? Since it’s widely spoken about, models are seeing its projection in their line of work through the following:

Raising awareness
When it comes to modelling assignments, models might be experiencing an interest in projects which want to convey sustainability through the fashion world. They might be booked with clients who are on the sustainable path and want to raise awareness.
Request to wear sustainable apparel
Clients might want their models to wear their own sustainable clothes for photo shoots or the client might provide their own wardrobe for them.

Eco-friendly modelling sets
Some clients are also taking on a sustainable outlook with their photoshoots and sets. Practices such as using natural lighting rather than artificial and recycled sets rather than brand new ones promote minimal waste.
Models may connect with sustainable companies just like our Models Direct talent has with Coco and Eve and Morrisons. We’re looking forward to seeing more clients approach our agency looking to create impactful campaigns which are on a mission to save the planet.
